GHS Silk & Steel 20 (.020”) Acoustic Guitar Single String
Most acoustic strings feature a bronze alloy wrap wire wound over a steel core. However. silk and steel strings offer something a bit different. The GHS Silk and Steel strings feature a silver plated copper wrap wire (typically found on classical strings) wrapped over a round steel core wire with a length of silk filament sandwiched between the outer wrap wire and the central core wire. The result is a more flexible string that delivers a softer more mellow tone, more akin to that of a classical string. Silk and steel strings are a great option for those players looking to tame a brighter sounding acoustic instrument and their lower tension also makes them a viable option for more delicate vintage instruments.
Silk and steel strings are also a worthwhile set to try if you suffer from any kind of discomfort that can often arise through playing heavier gauge steel strings.
Here’s what GHS say about these strings;
“For those that want a classical guitar tone and feel out of an acoustic, this is YOUR string. Synthetic rayon is run the length of the round core, wrapped with a silver-plated copper wire. The end result is a sweet and mellow tone, with a lower tension under the fingers.
“I’m a fingerstyle guitarist and my playing style requires the guitar strings I use to be lightweight, extremely easy on the fingers, and versatile; they must be able to handle both fast-paced tapping and quieter, more melodic playing. The Silk and Steel strings by GHS meet all of these requirements and then some! They provide a warm, mellow, clear tone while being long-lasting and comfortable to play for long periods of time. The Silk and Steel strings have successfully handled everything I’ve thrown at them, from soft accompaniment to a singer-songwriter, to rapid-fire tapping, all while maintaining tonal clarity and playing comfort.” -Yasmin Williams, Guitarist
